Ammunition - A firearm without ammo is a rock

I have been using several types of ammunition over the years and will detail my views and reviews on each here.

.30-06 For the M1 Garand

Greek Manufacture .30-06 Surplus Ammunition
Boxer primed and non-corrosive
Kid Kaos Grade: "A-"
Aprx. Muzzle Velocity: 2,910 ft/s
Aprx. Muzzle Energy: 2,829 ft.-lbs.
The only ammunition for my M1 Garand is the Greek manufacture .30-06 ammunition boxer primed and non-corrosive. Bought from the Civilian Marksmanship Program  (CMP) $134.00 per 480 round case
http://www.odcmp.com/ammo.htm

Bottom line here is that the M1 Garand was  designed to use this specific ammunition. The bullet itself is longer than standard or modern .30-06 hunting ammunition which will not seat correctly in the M1 Garand. In the end I have heard of people using modern hunting ammunition in the M1 Garand but I do not recommend it. Use what the rifle was designed to use.

The only reason I gave this an A- is because of the age you will occasionally see a round or two that is corroded or otherwise unusable and also I have had some duds. Maybe one in every 800 or so.

There is a great deal of the surplus ammunition available and often at a lower price than the modern hunting ammunition. Which brings me to a very important point.

Korean surplus .30-06 with the KA headstamp and other corrosive ammunitions
Kid Kaos Grade: "B-" to "C-"

About the Korean surplus .30-06 with the KA headstamp and other corrosive ammunitions available out there. Before buying any surplus ammunition for your M1 Garand make sure to find out if it is using the older corrosive primers. The 1970s Korean war production, "KA" headstamped ammunition is most common and often much cheaper than the non corrosive ammo but comes with a price. You have to clean your rifle very well after firing and soon after too. If you fail to do this you will suffer with moderate to severe pitting in your valuable M1 Garand. Not worth it in the least.

Boiling the rifle is highly recommended. As long as you take care to do this right after shooting there is no reason not to use it. Although I admit I don't and won't.

.45 ACP for the M1911 & Mech Tech CCU

Federal Tactical HST .45 +P 230gr
Kid Kaos Grade: "A+"

Expensive but worth it. It cycles through extremely well. I have never had a jam with this stuff. Quite a bit of a kick too. Supposedly will impart quite a lot of kinetic energy to the target. If I were to carry a 1911 as a sidearm this would probably be my ammunition of choice.

Reloaded .45 ACP 230GR TCJ RN
(Total Copper Jacket Round Nose)
Reported Muzzle Velocity =826ft/s
Kid Kaos Grade: "C+"
Price from
AmmoDirect.com for reloaded $304 per 1000 rounds. I use this to practice with because the price is so much less.

I do have an occasional jam, maybe one in every 150 rounds or so and I have encountered a dud every now and then. Maybe one in 500 or so.  Never had any squibs but I would not swear they would not happen.

If you encounter a dud fire just keep the firearm pointed down range for at least 90 seconds before removing the misfire. Never try to re-fire a dud. Basically this is good practice .45 ACP ammo for the price of a little over .30¢ per round.
Don't expect 100% and you will be satisfied.

.45 ACP Wolf ammunition
Kid Kaos Grade: "F"

About the very cheap .45 ACP Wolf ammunition packed in 450 round "spam" cans. Total crap. Seriously it is wasted money in a big way. The stuff is filthy.

My buddy and I went out to shoot a can we bought together for very little. He was using a CD 1911 identical to mine and a Kimber Officers model 1911. After no more than 20 or so rounds my CD 1911 began jamming on every shot. His Kimber did the same after 40 or so. He never ran any through his CD because we were disgusted with the mess it was already causing.

The entire firearm was blackened with residue inside and out. Seriously our hands faces and clothing was covered in it. I felt like I had been shooting black powder all day rather than 15 minutes with a modern center fire.

Stay away from this junk at any price. My buddy and I are still trying to get someone to take the stuff off our hands but so far no one is willing to. Please do not send me any more emails asking for it. I don't know you and I will not give or sell you any ammo if I don't know and trust you.

.45 Long Colt for the Twins

Winchester Cowboy Loads .45 Long Colt Lead RN 250 GR
Kid Kaos Grade: "A"
At a modest muzzle velocity of about 750 fps. and a soft lead bullet these are ideal for SASS or CAS shooting events. On many of the shooting stages the solid steal targets are placed so close you can feel the lead spray coming back on your face. Wear safety glasses.
I have never loaded anything else into them so that's all I know.

.357 Magnum for the S&W

Federal Premium Personal Defense Low Recoil Ammunition 357 Magnum 130 Grain Hydra-Shok Jacketed Hollow Point
Kid Kaos Grade: "A+"
Muzzle Velocity: 1300 fps
Muzzle Energy: 490 ft. lbs.
This is just an excellent powerful self defense round. It imparts a tremendous amount of kinetic energy into the target. Don't let anyone tell you that there is anything more important than the amount of kinetic energy imparted into the target. Nuf said.

.38 Special for the S&W

.38 Special 158GR LSWC
Kid Kaos Grade: "C+"
Price from
AmmoDirect.com for a box of 1000 reloaded .38 Special rounds $191.44. Basic control and handling ammunition.

I bought this to keep my wife and I in good practice with the home defense firearm at a lower cost than the much more expensive .357 Magnum ammunition.

What we do is practice with the .38 Special for about 100 to 150 rounds each. We do several exorcises repetitively for example close range controlled shooting at a hostage simulating target.

After about 24 rounds we would then move to quick acquisition shooting where we stand with our back to the S&W laying on the table un-cocked. Then at a sharp sound we turn grab the revolver acquire the target and fire a single shot without cocking the revolver. We will do this for about 24 rounds each.

After we have finished all our exorcises with the .38 Special we do each exorcise once with the .357 Magnum ammunition so that our muscle memory is left at the end with the much more powerful load.

Clean the chambers thoroughly because the shorter .38 rounds can cause buildup that can make loading and unloading the .357 rounds more difficult in the future. The same dud fire info for this reloaded ammunition applies to this as to the .45 ACP from above.
