Since the horrific
events of September 11th, we Americans have risen to our patriotic
duties in so many heroic ways.
We are all showing our support for our country in any way we can. One
wonderful way is with the pride in which we display our countries
colors. I am personally affected with deep emotions every time I pass a
home or car that is proudly displaying our colors. Even on our bridges
and overpasses proud Americans have set up a reminder that we are one
people united in a common cause.
To all those who take pride in our colors, as I do, thank you.
But now I must say one thing to all Americans.
All too often I have been forced to recover those same American Flags
from the ground. Some on the side of the highway amongst strewn paper
and old retread shreds. Others in the gutters waiting for the rain to
wash them down into the storm drains to be collected one day with the
rotting leaves and street rubbish. Presumably these have fallen from the
antennas of cars or have been pulled up by wind from front lawns.
No matter what the cause for our beautiful flags laying lost and
discarded, it is a disgrace.
Our colors are not a placard touting a cause that can be discarded when
the cause is won or worse forgotten. Our colors are not a trend that can
be left behind when the new fashion is announced. Our Flag is not a
badge to signify who is American and who is not.
Our colors are a symbol of the great country that millions dream of
living in peacefully. Our Flag is the visual representation of the
sacrifices that have been made by so many to keep us, and others, free.
Our hopes and dreams are sewn into the very fabric of our beloved Old
Glory.
In our time of grief following the attacks and the solidarity of a
nation of many uniting for one purpose today, it is important not to
loose sight of the real reason that this small strip of red, white and
blue cloth means so much to all Americans and to so many people who wish
to become Americans one day.
Please never let our dreams our hopes our glorious colors lay forgotten
in the gutter.
Thank you,
From just another American
